Description

That rare thing: a well-mannered, safe hunter in the field, at the front or on his own.

Oscar is a 16hh grey gelding, born 2011. He's a kind, experienced hunter who loves his hunting days as much as his rider. He is that rare thing - a well-mannered horse both in the field, at the front or on his own. Eager but not strong. Safe without being boring. He’s been a whip’s horse and hunted hounds, first at the Cottesmore and latterly with a hill pack (country akin to Exmoor) on the Welsh borders.  This season he’s been mainly ridden in the field by a small, middle-aged mum of two and done some Field Mastering. It’s been his first season without a formal job through no fault of his own (our Huntsman came with his own horse) and we’ve made the sad decision to sell him because he’s wasted as a spare. He's currently fit and hunting.  Oscar enthusiastically jumps show jumps or cross-country fences (he can be tried over both on viewing) but is a non-jumping hunter. He will not jump rails in a fence line. We think he’s had a bad experience in the past - he balks at the last minute and gets visibly upset. We bought him as a non-jumping hunter because we’re a non-jumping pack and would like to find another non-jumping hunting home for him.  In open hill country Oscar’s proven to be safe and sensible. He’s got a cracking engine, doesn’t waste energy pulling or prancing, will go all day whatever the weather and want to go longer.  At home he’s ridden by inexperienced amateurs and experienced riders alike. He lives on a family yard with the usual goings-on. He settles easily, no vices, eats his grub and keeps his weight. He’s easy to do in all ways - clip, box, shoe. 5* home only.  Our preference would be a home outside Hunt service so that he can give someone a lot of fun over many years and stay there until his eventual retirement from the hunting field.  Price reflects non-jumping home. He’s fit and ready to hunt the rest of the season.
